It is a generally accepted statistic that 119 people out of 120 will not get dementia, it is also recognised that the proteins in the brain that effectively cause it start to ‘malfunction’ 10 to 15 years before any signs and symptoms appear.
So what does this mean for us, it means that we should look after our brain health way before we reach our 60’s and 70’s. This means we should exercise, eat a balanced diet, drink our 1.5 – 2 litres of fluid a day, drop the sugar intake and eat those neuro-protectors, yes throughout our lives, but if not, pick up the habits in our middle years.
It is not always easy, family demands, pressures of work may all impact on our motivation to ‘keep well’, however it may improve your chances of not being that 1 in 120.
